Truly Custom Clothing, Without the Usual Restrictions

Truly custom clothing should not mean a stream of “not possible”, restrictive quantities or other supplier speak. Our 20+ years of experience is in managing the complexity behind the scenes to make your brief work.

That might mean five individual customisations on every shirt, an unusual fabric, artwork that changes from one garment to the next or a design that does not fit neatly into a standard production process. Those details make the order more involved for us, but they should not make the experience more difficult for the customer.

The word “custom” is used rather loosely in clothing. Sometimes it means selecting a stock garment, choosing from a small range of colours and adding a logo in a predetermined position. That may suit some orders perfectly well, but it is not what we mean by truly custom clothing.

At CLIFTON, the starting point is the brief:

  • What are you trying to create, and who will be wearing it?
  • Which details matter to the group, such as logos, sponsors or individual references that need to change across the order?

We then work backwards from the finished result and build the design and production process around it, while all that complexity stays behind the scenes.

That may mean refining artwork, adjusting placements, resolving production questions or finding a practical way to achieve something that does not fit neatly into an established process. We never simply take the brief and push it straight into production.

That takes concentration, good systems and a team that understands that what looks like a small detail on a production sheet may matter enormously to the person receiving the clothing.

Customers should not need to manage any of that. From their side, the result should feel straightforward: the right garments, with the right details, exactly as approved. The work required to make that happen stays with us.

The processes needed to support that approach are not particularly visible once the finished clothing arrives, but they are what allow ambitious briefs to move through production without becoming a headache for the customer.

Truly custom clothing should feel freeing, not restrictive. It should allow a team, business, club or group to create something that reflects who they are, rather than asking them to remove every interesting detail until the order becomes convenient for the supplier.
