If you’ve ever looked at a blazer size chart and noticed that a Size 40 shows a larger chest measurement than 40", it can seem confusing at first. In reality, this is completely normal and an essential part of how tailoring works.
When a blazer is labelled Size 40, this refers to the body size the blazer is designed to fit, not the actual measurement of the blazer itself. The measurements shown in the size breakdown are the actual garment dimensions, which are intentionally larger to allow for comfort, layering, and natural movement.
For example:
- Size 40 body chest = 102cm
- Blazer chest measurement (Slim Fit) = typically 104–108cm
If a Size 40 blazer actually measured 40" (102cm), it would be skin tight and effectively unwearable, particularly once worn over a shirt or knitwear. Instead, blazers include what tailors call ease which is extra room built into the garment so it sits properly on the body and allows comfortable movement.
How This Works on the CLIFTON Website
At checkout as you select your Size Group, Blazer Fit, and Size, the Actual Measurements automatically update below to show the exact garment dimensions for that selection. This allows you to sense check against an existing blazer that fits you well.
You’ll see measurements such as:

These are the actual garment measurements, not the body measurements, and are there to help you compare with something you already own.
This makes sizing much easier and more accurate, particularly for made to order garments.
Sleeve Length and Back Length Are Always Exact
In addition, Sleeve Length and Back Length are always tailored to your exact selection. These are not generic estimates, but bespoke adjustments based on your needs.
This means you can:
- Choose your standard size for body fit
- Adjust sleeve length if needed
- Adjust back length if preferred
- Sense check using the actual measurements shown
This combination gives you both standardised sizing and made-to-order precision.
Why Blazers Need Extra Room
Blazers are designed to be worn over other clothing such as dress shirts, polos, or lightweight knitwear. Without additional room, the blazer would pull at the buttons, restrict arm movement, and lose its clean tailored silhouette.
This approach is standard across tailoring and used by:
- Traditional tailoring houses
- Premium menswear brands
- Made to order garments
- Off the rack blazers
Even Slim Fit blazers include this built in ease. Slim fit simply means a slightly more tailored silhouette, usually with less room through the waist and body, but still with enough space for comfort and movement.
What Size Should You Choose?
In most cases:
- If you normally wear Size 40 Slim, choose Size 40 Slim
- If you normally wear Size 42 Regular, choose Size 42 Regular
Then use the actual measurements shown to sense check against an existing blazer.
