Why Rugby Is Growing So Fast in the United States

Rugby in the United States has shifted from being niche to something that is genuinely building momentum. We see it directly through the teams we work with. Orders are no longer concentrated in one area. We are producing kit and off-field clothing for teams across the US, and it is coming from everywhere, not just a handful of established areas.

A big part of that growth is coming through colleges. University programs are better organised, there are more fixtures, and players are far more likely to stay involved after graduating by joining local clubs. That continuity matters. It creates stronger clubs, better standards, and a more stable base for the sport to grow from.

At the same time, visibility has improved. Major League Rugby, international tournaments, and social media have all made the sport easier to access. More people are watching it, understanding it, and then deciding to play.

There is also a clear crossover from other sports. Players coming from football, wrestling, and athletics are finding rugby appealing because it offers physicality but also a different kind of culture. That culture is a big part of the appeal. Tours, socials, alumni events, and club traditions are central to rugby in a way that is hard to replicate in other sports. It is not just about what happens on the field.

As that ecosystem grows, expectations change. Teams are no longer just asking for a basic set of jerseys. They are thinking about how they represent themselves across an entire season. That includes what they wear on tour, what they wear to events, and how they build a consistent identity across squads and over time.

That is where the split between on-field and off-field clothing becomes more important.

Performance kit still needs to do its job. It has to be durable, consistent, and fit properly across men’s, women’s, and youth teams. We produce fully custom performance rugby kits that are designed for exactly that.

But what has grown just as quickly is demand for off-field clothing. Teams want something they can actually wear beyond match day, whether that is on tour, at socials, or around campus. They want it to feel like their club, not something generic.

That is where pieces like cotton rugby shirts and polos come in. Our custom rugby shirts and polos are designed to give teams full control over how that looks, from colors and patterns through to the smaller details that make something feel specific to them.

The shift is simple. Teams now care about identity as much as they care about function. Off-the-shelf options might work short term, but they do not build something that lasts or feels like part of the club.

Rugby in the US is still early compared to more established markets, but the direction is clear. More teams, more players, and higher standards across the board. From what we are seeing, this is not isolated growth. It is happening everywhere.

If you are involved in a club or university team, it is worth thinking about how you want your team to show up, not just on the field, but across everything you do.
