Using AI-Generated Designs in Custom Clothing

AI design tools have made it incredibly easy to generate bold, imaginative shirt concepts. We’re now regularly sent artwork that customers have created themselves using AI. Some of it is genuinely impressive.

What’s important to understand, however, is that an AI-generated image is not the same thing as a production-ready garment file.

Recently, a customer sent us a design featuring a raccoon in oversized sunglasses, standing on a sun-soaked beach holding a bright red cocktail, wearing a vivid yellow Hawaiian shirt covered in Delta Airlines aircraft. It had palm trees, turquoise sea, scattered planes in flight, and just the right amount of humour. It was clearly designed to be memorable - we loved it!

AI-generated Hawaiian shirt concept artwork

As you can see, the concept image was strong. But like most AI-generated artwork, it was not built for or even slightly ready for manufacture. It wasn’t structured as a seamless repeat. It wasn’t in vector format. It hadn’t been separated across garment panels. It hadn’t been scaled for multiple sizes. It was a visual concept.

With more than 18 years of manufacturing custom clothing, we know how to translate that kind of creative concept into a garment that works properly in production.

In this case, our Studio team rebuilt the design entirely in vector format. The Delta aircraft motif was reconstructed into a repeat pattern that would scale consistently across all sizes. The raccoon illustration was repositioned carefully across front and back panels so that it aligned cleanly with seams and the button placket. Edges were refined for print clarity, colours were balanced for fabric consistency, and the layout was engineered specifically for a cut-and-sew Hawaiian shirt rather than simply placing an image onto fabric.

That translation step is where experience matters.

AI tools do not account for seam allowances, fabric behaviour, panel breaks, print tolerances or how artwork performs when scaled from a small to a 3XL garment. They do not consider how colour saturation shifts on different base fabrics. They do not anticipate how an illustration crosses structural elements of a shirt. Those are manufacturing decisions, not creative ones.

The final shirts came out exactly as intended, front and back, with sharp print, clean alignment and proper balance across the garment.

AI-generated shirt transformed into production garment

The customer later left us a 5-star Trustpilot review - "We had custom Hawaiian shirts designed for our organization. Everyone was very pleased with both the design and shirt quality. We are placing a second order."

The second order is what matters. It confirms that the product delivered in reality, not just in concept!

AI is a powerful creative tool. Used properly, it accelerates ideation and helps organisations explore bold ideas quickly. But the production stage still requires technical judgement, garment engineering and disciplined approval processes.

Our approach is simple. Treat AI artwork as a starting point. Rebuild it properly. Engineer it for the specific product. Lock approvals before production. Deliver exactly what was signed off.

AI is changing how ideas are generated. It isn’t replacing the manufacturing expertise required to deliver them properly.

If you’ve created a concept using AI and want to see what it would look like as a production-ready garment, send it to us and we’ll review it properly. We’ll tell you what’s possible, what needs adjusting, and how to engineer it for the product you want.
